Subject

History

Develop your love of history further, gaining the skills to research, write and debate. You will study periods from the early medieval to the present, from countries and regions around the world.

Each module is based on the latest research of your tutors. You will relate historical thinking to the topical issues of today. Your topic choice is extensive, including conflict, politics, the environment, social attitudes, consumerism, gender and identity.

Wide reading and work with historical sources will develop your ability to think critically, debate issues and make informed decisions. Studying history will help you understand society, culture, politics and economic life.

Modules

In each year you will study 120 credits of modules. In year one you will study one 20-credit core module, four 20-credit optional modules, and choose one 20-credit module from another department. For example, this could be from Archaeology, or Film and Television Studies. Alternatively, you could study a language for credits through our Language Centre.

In year two, you will choose either five or six 20-credit optional modules from History. Choices range from medieval, early modern, modern and contemporary history, dealing with particular countries or regions from around the world. If you only choose five optional modules, you can make up the remaining 20 credits by taking a module from another department. Again, this could be from Archaeology, or Film and Television Studies. Alternatively, you could study a language for credits through our Language Centre.

In your final year you will take a Special Subject module, which focuses on a specialised area of history and develops your analysis of primary sources. You will also complete a 10,000-12,000 word dissertation based on a research project of your choice. You then choose two optional History modules (worth 20-credits each).

Placement and volunteering opportunities are available in the Department of History, as well as via the Nottingham Advantage Award. You can also spend time overseas through the University of Nottingham Study Abroad programme.

History is a very popular subject (although numbers have fallen of late) — in 2015, over 10,000 UK students graduated in a history-related course. Obviously, there aren't 11,000 jobs as historians available every year, but history is a good, flexible degree that allows graduates to go into a wide range of different jobs, and consequently history graduates have an unemployment rate comparable to the national graduate average. Many — probably most — jobs for graduates don't ask for a particular degree to go into them and history graduates are well set to take advantage. That's why so many go into jobs in the finance industry, human resources, marketing, PR and events management, as well as the more obvious roles in education, welfare and the arts. Around one in five history graduates went into further study last year. History and teaching were the most popular further study subjects for history graduates, but law, journalism, and politics were also popular postgraduate courses.
