STEP is not required but may be taken into consideration when offered. A levels in general studies, critical thinking and citizenship studies are not accepted.

By studying maths at Nottingham, our dedicated mathematicians will fuel your interest for the subject. The course covers pure and applied maths, mathematical physics and statistics and you'll be taught by experts in advanced mathematical techniques and theories.

Together with your direct subject knowledge, you will also develop expertise in analytical thinking and problem-solving. These are valuable skills when you are applying for jobs. A mathematics degree can lead to lots of different careers. Many graduates choose jobs in banking and finance but with growth in sectors such as data analytics and software development our graduates are in demand in industry too. Others go on to work in science and engineering and teaching.

There's flexibility to transfer onto the MMath integrated masters during the first two years. You can also spend time overseas through the university's study abroad programme.

Modules

All students follow a common programme of study for the first year. You will focus on core modules that provide a solid foundation in the main mathematical topics. You'll build on your existing knowledge in areas such as calculus, probability and statistics. There will also be an introduction to key mathematical concepts in pure maths, linear mathematics and mathematical structures.

During the second year, you'll continue to study two of the three main mathematical subject areas by choosing from a range of optional modules.

The third year provides you with even more freedom to choose optional modules in the areas that interest you. From cryptography to quantum theory or finance to fluid dynamics you'll have multiple options to choose from. You may choose to do a project module providing you with an introduction to mathematical research and learning skills that may be useful for your future career.

Want to feel needed? This is one of the most flexible degrees of all and with so much of modern work being based on data, there are options everywhere for maths graduates. With all that training in handling figures, it's hardly surprising that a lot of maths graduates go into well-paid jobs in the IT or finance industries, and last year, a maths graduate in London could expect a very respectable average starting salary of £27k. And we're always short of teachers in maths, so that is an excellent option for anyone wanting to help the next generation. And if you want a research job, you'll want a doctorate — and a really good maths doctorate will get you all sorts of interest from academia and finance — and might secure some of the highest salaries going for new leavers from university.
