Here's what University of Nottingham says about its Mathematics course.
Are you curious about how advanced techniques in mathematical modelling are used? Do you want to learn about insights from the latest mathematical research?
During this MMath you will cover these topics, learning from dedicated mathematicians. Our degree gives you the chance to learn more about the exciting research our academics are working on, whilst giving you the knowledge and skills to carry out your own research. You'll develop your skills in problem solving and analysis. At the same time, the course will enable you to enhance and develop your transferable skills in project work, group study and presentations. There's a range of specialised modules across all branches of mathematics, based upon our diverse research interests. Our academics are working on problems that span:
medicine, biotechnology and food security
epidemic modelling
fluid mechanics, with applications in industry and biology
-statistical machine learning
algebra and number theory
mathematical finance
On this MMath, you'll have the chance to put your knowledge into practice during the final-year dissertation. This gives you a taster of what it is like to conduct your own research project, under expert supervision.

In the first year, all modules are compulsory. You will study core maths and also take foundation modules in the three main subject areas. These include pure mathematics, applied mathematics, probability and statistics.
In year two, you will spend one third of your year studying core mathematics modules. For the remainder of your time, you will choose from a range of optional modules. This enables you to study topics that particularly interest you. You'll learn to follow rigorous methods and focus on proof of your workings. You also have the option to choose some modules from outside mathematics. Common choices include business, a language and psychology.
A group project in the third year and a dissertation in the final year allow you to develop your group and independent study skills. We offer lots of optional modules for you to tailor your own degree and study topics that interest you. Many modules give you the opportunity for hands-on practical experience in using high-level statistical computer programmes, undertaking computer simulations, modelling and discussing your ideas.
