About this course
Chemistry plays a significant role in our society. It is central to developing drugs, creating vaccines, and treating illnesses.
You will explore the interplay between chemistry and biology to develop an understanding of human disease and drug design. The course is built on core chemistry but also includes modules in physiology and pharmacology. In these modules, you will learn about drug delivery, metabolism and targeting, drug structures and toxicities and cancer agents.

A degree in chemistry will prepare you for a wide range of careers. You will develop the necessary academic and practical skills for a career in industry, whether that be in pharmaceutical, petrochemical, cosmetics, or others. You will also develop your written and oral communication skills, and gain transferable skills such as problem-solving, numeracy and data analysis. These are desired by other industries including finance, media, and management.
Modules
In the first year, you will take introductory modules in chemistry, physiology and pharmacology, including practical training.
In your second year you will cover topics in physical, inorganic and organic chemistry in more depth. You'll also study spectroscopy, biological chemistry and pharmacology.
In year three you will study advanced modules in chemistry and drug discovery. You will apply the theoretical, computational and experimental techniques you have learned to an area of your choice with a final research project.

Top job areas of graduates
Around 2,500 graduates got degrees in this demanding but valuable subject last year. Chemistry graduates are in demand from a wide range of industries, from the food, oil, chemicals and pharmaceuticals to consultancy, technical analysis and teaching. They're also prized by business and finance employers for their research and data handling skills — anywhere there is research and data to be explained, you can find chemistry grads. If you want a career in research, you need a doctorate, so start planning now if you fancy one of these exciting and challenging jobs - but good students can usually get grants to take a doctorate, so don't worry about the financing if you think you have what it takes. The recession wasn’t too kind to chemists, particularly in the pharmaceutical industry (one of the key employers for chemists), but things are getting back to normal for this flexible group and it's one of the few degrees that is bucking the current trend and increasing graduate numbers.
