Mental health nursing

Join an award-winning community of student nurses in a school with over 30 years' experience in delivering nursing education. We have an excellent reputation for medical training, ranked 5th in the UK for nursing*.

**Fully accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council**

Upon successful completion of the course, you'll be eligible to register as a newly qualified nurse with the NMC.

**Study in an active healthcare environment**

We're based in a Medical School in one of the UK's largest major hospitals. You'll have the chance to experience placements in a diverse range of settings, such as medical, surgical, acute care and community nursing as well as forensic settings, child and adolescent mental health services and parent and baby mental health services.

Placements are located within four large NHS trusts and local private or independent healthcare providers.

**Mental health nursing pathway**

You'll learn how to care for people of all ages suffering with mental health conditions ranging from depression, addiction, eating disorders and schizophrenia.

Through expert teaching and supportive supervision, you'll learn to attend to mental health patients' medical needs and care for their personal wellbeing. Our course will help you develop the skills and knowledge you need to become a nursing leader in an ever-changing healthcare environment.

Modules

In your first year you will develop essential care and assessment skills, learn safeguarding issues, such as infection control and detecting vulnerable people, and learn how to work in a professional setting. In year two, you will build on your previous experience from first-year placements and study. You will then begin to take on more responsibility, and further your clinical reasoning skills as you start to look after one or two patients of your own. By your final year you will be working under more distant supervision, and you will be responsible for a small group of patients making confident and proactive decisions for their health.

Extra funding

Bursaries of £5,000 will be available for students starting a nursing course from September 2020, with some students eligible for up to an additional £3,000 per year. This funding will be introduced from September 2020 and further information is available on the NHS Health careers website.
