Software engineering

If you want to study software engineering at Sheffield but you don’t have the right A Levels, this is the most direct route. The foundation year gives you the necessary grounding in maths, physics and other areas. Complete it to the required standard and you’re guaranteed a place on a degree course.

Sheffield is the only computer science department in the UK with its own student-run software company – Genesys Solutions. The academic standard is high, with a strong emphasis on the scientific principles that underpin new technology. This combination of advanced science, creativity and business skills makes it the perfect training ground for software engineers.

You will get the chance to work for Genesys as part of your course, providing solutions for real clients. As well as hands-on experience, you will get a solid grounding in the fundamentals, including the latest research on artificial intelligence. Third and fourth-year subjects include e-commerce, 3D graphics and games technology. Teaching staff are experts in iPhone, Android and VR technology. Guest lecturers come from IBM, Microsoft and HP.

Our graduates are problem solvers. They can program. They work well in teams. And they understand the theoretical principles. They are consultants and software engineers with companies including Accenture, Amazon, Deutsche Bank, Google, HSBC, IBM, Microsoft and Reuters.

A specialist subject, and not surprisingly graduates tend to go into software engineering roles or related. The degree classification students achieved made a particular difference last year — computing graduates with the best grades were much less likely to be out of work after six months and employers can even rate a good grade as important as work experience. Most students do get jobs, though, and starting salaries are good — particularly in London, where average starting salaries for good graduates were getting towards £38k last year. Be aware that at the moment, recruitment agencies are much the most common way for graduates from this degree to get their first job, so it may be worth getting in touch with a few specialist agencies in advance of graduation if you take this degree to get a foot in the door.
