A*AA including mathematics (minimum grade A) and physics (minimum grade A), with a pass in the physics Practical (where it is separately endorsed). If you are taking an EPQ in addition to 3 A levels, you will receive the following offer in addition to the standard A level offer: AAA including mathematics and physics, with a pass in the physics Practical (where it is separately endorsed) plus grade A in the EPQ. We are committed to ensuring that all applicants with the potential to succeed, regardless of their background, are encouraged to apply to study with us. The additional information gained through contextual data allows us to recognise an applicant's potential to succeed in the context of their background and experience. Applicants who are highlighted in this way will be made an offer which is lower than the typical offer for that programme. Applicants who have not studied the required subjects at A-level can apply for the Engineering/Physics/Mathematics Foundation Year.

Course summary

What this course is about

UCAS code: H40P

Here's what University of Southampton says about its Aeronautics and Astronautics with External Placement Year course.

This course covers the core subjects of aeronautics and astronautics, focusing on fast-moving aircraft and spacecraft in the Earth’s atmosphere and outer space. The first two years are the same across our Aeronautics and Astronautics degrees and focus on core engineering science, such as aerodynamics, propulsion systems, mechanics of flight, fluid dynamics and control, giving you a professional grounding for the design and operation of air vehicles and spacecraft.

Modules in your third year will deepen your understanding of aircraft design, including their environmental impacts. You will also carry out an individual project, bringing together the concepts and skills you have learned.

You will have access to extensive facilities, which include dedicated student design studios and workshops, the largest wind tunnel in any UK university, state-of-the-art jet engine and space propulsion facilities, a flight simulator and a professional manufacturing centre.

Your Industrial Placement Year will enhance your employability, with an additional year-long paid placement in an engineering organisation. You will be able to apply the knowledge and skills that you developed during the early years of your degree, developing vital professional knowledge and skills to prepare you to become a professional engineer after graduation.

Our courses are fully accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society and Institution of Mechanical Engineers and offer a route to chartered status.

The Student union is very active with campaigns, events and feedback. Thereu2019s lots of club however they introduced a sports pass so you have to pay to be a member and play sports. This has discouraged many and resulted in less student participation in societies.

They offer a commuter fund which was very helpful for me as their parking permits are expensive, which should be lowered as parking is very hard to find.

There is lots of academic and well-being support that is frequently advertised and I attended the academic skills clinic, which was helpful. I donu2019t know about other services as I donu2019t use them.

Thereu2019s only two main study areas that are usually very busy, they could increase the study rooms available and make it niceee atmosphere, compared to other universities. I donu2019t know about other facilities, like accommodation.

My timetable is good because I donu2019t have many contact hours, I personally like this as a commuter. The lectures are always really helpful even though they vary in style, and they fully take on board feedback. The tutorials are less helpful because it depends on your tutor- some can really help ...
