We normally consider applicants who offer at least 1 Advanced Higher. Applicants presenting with only Highers will be considered on a case by case basis. Where Highers are taken over two years it might be expected that higher grades are achieved, particularly in any specific subjects required. Globally, computer science systems, networks and applications affect many aspects of our everyday lives.

At Southampton our Computer Science graduates have a world-leading reputation for creative solutions based on cutting-edge knowledge and state-of-the-art technical skills. Our four-year MEng Computer Science degree builds on the BSc Computer Science and provides the core professional skills, knowledge and understanding that underpin computer science, enabling you to work in any area of the computing industry. Key areas of study include: programming languages, development environments, modelling tools, methodologies in capturing requirements, structuring applications and data achieving thorough program testing.

100 per cent of our computer science and IT research has been rated world leading or internationally excellent for its impact on society (REF, 2014). Our outstanding facilities and renowned teaching staff prepare our students to work in a wide variety of areas and fields.

Our graduates are in high demand; we have strong relationships with employers and our own Careers Hub website. We also run an annual careers fair and have a dedicated startup incubator, Future Worlds, to support student enterprise. All Computer Science and Software Engineering programmes are accredited by the British Computer Society and by the Institution of Engineering and Technology.

Modules

This four-year programme with a year in industry will enable you to pursue a career in any area of the computing industry. It has been designed to maximise student choice by allowing you to tailor the degree structure to suit your own interests. During the first two years you will undertake a series of core modules, for example Programming, Computer Systems, Data Management, Intelligent Systems and Interaction Design. In your third year you can choose from a wide range of optional modules that reflect the specialist areas and key technologies of computer science that will be critical in the future. You will also work on an individual project with the potential to explore cutting edge technologies and innovative applications. The fourth year particularly emphasises engineering design, management and industrial collaboration.
