About this course Build your critical thinking, cultural understanding and communication skills by studying English and choosing to learn one language from French, German or Spanish. Choose topics and gain expertise in areas that interest you most, including: translation and interpretation, contemporary society, literature and film, anthropology and history. You can choose a language you have not studied. You'll get extra hours of teaching and funding for a language course abroad at the end of year 1 to make fast progress. Spend a year of this 4 year English and modern languages degree abroad on a workplace, teaching or university placement.
Our graduates are creative, adaptable thinkers working in publishing, journalism, marketing, teaching, heritage, and beyond. Many find roles in copywriting, PR, editorial, or media, while others succeed in law, business, or further study. Southampton English graduates are highly employable, with 100% in work or further study within 15 months of graduating (Graduate Outcomes 2022/2023, Published in 2025). Employers value the research, communication, and analytical skills you’ll gain.

Over the four years of this English course, you’ll spend around 25% of your time studying your chosen language, with the remaining 75% spent on modules in linguistics, cultural studies, other languages, or modules from outside the department.
Year 1: Start to develop your language skills. You’ll take a year-long double module in the language covering all the relevant areas of language study. Year 2: You’ll study language-specific linguistics modules for your chosen language. You can choose modules that equip you with different ways to study cultures and languages that will further build your understanding of language within culture. Year 3: Year Abroad Year 4: You’ll develop your language and linguistics studies to an advanced level on your return from abroad. You’ll further understand languages and culture through advanced modules that cover a range of topics from migration to film and literature.
You will also have opportunities to tailor your learning through student-selected units and an elective placement.

The Student union is very active with campaigns, events and feedback. Thereu2019s lots of club however they introduced a sports pass so you have to pay to be a member and play sports. This has discouraged many and resulted in less student participation in societies.

I donu2019t stay in Southampton much as I donu2019t think there is a lot to do and feel it lacks community.

They offer a commuter fund which was very helpful for me as their parking permits are expensive, which should be lowered as parking is very hard to find.

There is lots of academic and well-being support that is frequently advertised and I attended the academic skills clinic, which was helpful. I donu2019t know about other services as I donu2019t use them.

Thereu2019s only two main study areas that are usually very busy, they could increase the study rooms available and make it niceee atmosphere, compared to other universities. I donu2019t know about other facilities, like accommodation.

My timetable is good because I donu2019t have many contact hours, I personally like this as a commuter. The lectures are always really helpful even though they vary in style, and they fully take on board feedback. The tutorials are less helpful because it depends on your tutor- some can really help ...
