60 credits with a minimum of 45 credits at Level 3 of which 45 credits must be at Distinction. A core science Access to HE Diploma must be studied. Cambridge International Pre-U Certificate - Principal
D3, M2, M2 to include two science subjects. Science subjects considered include Biology, Chemistry, Maths, Physics and Geography. Cambridge Pre-U's can be used in combination with other qualifications such as A Levels to achieve the equivalent of the typical offer, where D3 can be used in lieu of A Level grade A or grade M2 can be used in lieu of grade B. International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme
Pass with overall score of 32 points, with 16 points required at higher level: including 6 points from two science subjects. Science subjects considered include Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths (Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation), Environmental Studies, Geography and Geology. International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (IBCP): The University of Southampton accepts the IBCP for entry to their degree programmes, recognising the value of combining academic skills with practical skills, providing a solid preparation for university level work. Offers will be made on the individual components of the IBCP. Applicants not taking the full IBCP but presenting with a combination of a Level 3 vocational qualification and IB Certificates may still be considered. Offers will be made on the individual Diploma Course subject(s) and the career-related study qualification. The CP core will not form part of the offer. Where there is a subject pre-requisite(s), applicants will be required to study the subject(s) at Higher Level in the Diploma course subject and/or take a specified unit in the career-related study qualification. We normally consider applicants who offer at least 1 Advanced Higher. Applicants presenting with only Highers will be considered on a case by case basis. About this course
Our unique interdisciplinary degree will develop your understanding of our marine environment and how it interacts with the Earth’s processes.
You will gain an in-depth knowledge of oceanography and the study of the ocean and its relationship to the planet, whilst complimenting your study with modules in physical geography. You will gain a full picture of the Earth from its core, through to the ocean and land right up to the atmosphere. Our students typically spend 75% of their degree in Oceanography with 25% in Physical Geography.
Taught by expert staff, you will be part of an innovative research environment with access to cutting edge facilities including our dedicated research vessels, which are moored just minutes away from our lecture theatres. In year-three you will complete an independent project in one of our research groups. Fieldwork is an integral part of the course and you will be coached in a variety of current fieldwork techniques in a number of exciting locations.
All of our Oceanography courses are accredited by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST). Oceanography is ranked 4th in the world for academic rankings of world universities. *Shanghai Ranking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2020
