We normally consider applicants who offer at least 1 Advanced Higher. Applicants presenting with only Highers will be considered on a case by case basis. About this course
This degree is designed to perfect your linguistic, cultural, sociopolitical and historical knowledge of the regions of the world's second most spoken language. You will experience the rich diversity of Spanish cultures, develop your language skills and increase your understanding of the cultures, languages and history of Spain and Latin America.
You will be able to choose a range of optional modules from linguistics, politics, history and cultural studies among others. You will spend your year abroad in the Spanish-speaking country of your choice where you could be an English language assistant in a school, studying at one of our partner universities or on a work placement.
Modern languages and linguistics at Southampton is ranked fifth in the UK for the quality of our research (REF 2014). Teaching and learning is supported by three research centres, Transnational Studies, Global Englishes and Applied Language Research. You will be able to learn another language such as Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese or Russian from scratch, and reach graduate level in French, Italian, German and Portuguese

It's often said there's a shortage of modern language graduates, and graduates from Spanish courses have a lot of options available to them when they complete their courses. In 2015, nearly 1300 UK graduates got degrees in Spanish and the subject is seeing its popularity increase. About one in five got jobs overseas — often as English teachers.
