The Higher National Diploma (HNC/ HND) in Computing gives you the opportunity to follow your interest in Computing at Higher Education level. If you are a student who has completed their level 3 studies recently or you are an adult looking to develop new skills and opportunities, the HND in Computing will give you the abilities you need to target exciting careers in the field of IT/Computing. Locally and nationally, demand for IT professionals is ever-increasing. Based in our state-of-the-art new facilities and using industry-level technologies, students studying the HND in Computing will develop the technical, theoretical and personal skills needed to analyse, design, develop and support modern IT systems. The course is designed to develop both the technical and academic aptitudes that students need for a career in Computing - specifically building the skills and understanding required to progress into software and systems development roles.

Modules

Your first year of study (HNC) will consist of the following units: • Programming • Networking • Professional Practice • Database Design and Development • Security • Managing a Successful Computing Project • Computer Systems Architecture • Software Development Lifecycles These units will give you grounding in the theories and practices of coding and developing business systems – along with the technical and mathematical abilities to understand how computers function. You will learn how to manage IT projects, and develop your communication, business knowledge and analysis skills (of equal importance to modern employers as the technical skills). In the second (HND) year, you will specialise further in software and systems development.

Assessment methods

Students taking the HND in Computing will be assessed using a range of techniques. Units are usually internally assessed and externally verified by the awarding body. The assessments themselves are a mixture of academic and practical tasks, depending upon the topics in question.
