This course has been designed to allow the freedom to explore current aesthetic, political, cultural and environmental issues with the understanding that the studio extends beyond the indoor space. Employability has been designed into the course to prepare students for a working life in the full range of creative practices.
It will enable students to develop an individual approach and engender the required excellence to successfully become a creative professional.

The Art and the Environment programme aims to provide an interdisciplinary approach to the study of art in theory and practice, allied to knowledge of a range of related creative activities. A key aspect of the course is the opportunity for students to direct their learning towards personal interests and vocational aspirations, engendering increasing independence and self- reliance in preparation for lifelong reskilling and occupational resilience.

This course is designed to reflect contemporary working realities in the creative industries by valuing and engaging with established practices, whilst also encouraging exploration of innovative ways of working across traditional discipline boundaries. It seeks to look outwards from the start, having a clear focus on the world of employment from the beginning. It explores the unique opportunities given to the study of art by its location within a land-based institution.

The educational aims of the course are to:

1. Equip students with the knowledge, skills and experience that are relevant to the field of art practice and the creative industries and to the wider cultural context, workplace and economy, with a focus on: the practical production of art objects, an understanding of theoretical (i.e. historical, philosophical and wider cultural) contexts and professional practices.

2. Foster a holistic approach to the integration of new technologies into creative practice as well as maintaining an emphasis on environmental sustainability.

3. Reflect contemporary working realities in the creative sectors by both valuing and engaging with time-honoured practices, while also encouraging an exploration of innovative ways of working across traditional discipline boundaries.

4. Provide opportunities to develop skills and techniques, to know how to update those skills and to foster a capacity for independent learning, critical and reflective thinking; in sum, provide a coherent, effective and resilient approach to initial skill-acquisition and lifelong reskilling.

5. To provide a supportive environment that enables an increasing degree of student independence over the duration of the course. To encourage values such as collegiality, collaboration, the ability to communicate complex ideas effectively and support an open- minded, hard-working and collaborative studio culture, which incorporates regular group critiques incorporating contributions from staff and students.

6. To help students to develop a wide range of strategies to deal with self-promotion, seeking employment and general engagement with the professional art world. To encourage high aspiration in the context of a realistic understanding of the opportunities and difficulties presented by the art world.

7. To encourage, from the start, students to see themselves as part of the wider art world and to engage (as appropriate to their progression on the course and their level of confidence) with that wider world, laying the basis for lifelong development and learning within the field, whether within academia or industry.

Top job areas of graduates

Quite a few students of fine art have already retired and are taking the degree for the excellent reason that they love art, and they're willing to pay to study it. You should bear this in mind if the stats you see feature particularly low employment rates. If you need to earn a living once you've finished your fine art degree, be aware that freelancing and self-employment is common - about one in six fine arts graduates were working for themselves. Also common are what is termed 'portfolio careers' — having several part-time jobs or commissions at once - and many courses actually help you prepare for freelancing. One in ten of last year’s fine arts graduates had more than one job six months after graduation — over twice the average for graduates from 2015. Graduates from these subjects are often found in arts jobs, as artists, designers, photographers and similar jobs, or as arts and entertainment officers or teachers — although it's perfectly possible to get jobs outside the arts if you wish, with jobs in events management, marketing and community work amongst the most popular options.
