The Higher National Diploma (HND) in Aeronautical Engineering allows students to achieve a qualification equivalent to the first two years of a degree.
The programme is taught by industry specialists dedicated to ensuring you acquire the skills and knowledge required to succeed in the sector and offers the opportunity to develop an in-depth understanding of the various aspects of flight and professional standards.

**Work Experience and Placement**
There is no requirement for work experience or a work placement within an Engineering company, although it is encouraged for those that have not currently employed in the sector. Using our excellent links with local employers we will always support you in finding a suitable placement.

**After the Course**
If you successfully achieve your programme of study, you will be awarded a Pearson Higher National Diploma (Level 5) in Aeronautical Engineering. On successful completion of the HND Aeronautical Engineering, you could apply to complete a full BEng Honours degree. Your second option would be to seek employment with an engineering company.

Modules

A typical week has around 10 - 12 hours of contact time in taught sessions, plus additional 1-1 support available by student request. As with all higher education programmes, students are required to take ownership of their learning and development and should expect to spend time studying and completing assessment tasks with independence outside of lectures.

You will study a range of units that will develop your specialist knowledge and skills. Listed below are examples of units that are likely to be studied:

Year 1 (Level 4):
Engineering Design, Engineering Mathematics, Engineering Science, Managing a Professional Engineering Project, Aircraft Aerodynamics, Aircraft Electrical Power & Distribution Systems, Airframe Mechanical Systems, Turbine Rotary Wing Mechanical and Flight Systems.

Year 2 (Level 5):
Research Project, Aircraft Flight Control Systems, Professional Engineering Management, Further Mathematics, Aircraft Propulsion Principles and Technology, Advanced Turbines and Flight Systems, Aircraft Structural Integrity.

Assessment methods

You will be assessed using a range of methods including presentations, assignments and practical assessments. Feedback will be provided to you in writing, along with information reflecting your performance and recommendations for improvement.
