Our degree in Civil Engineering is a path for students to become a leader in tomorrow's complex world. Civil engineers develop infrastructure and have a profound effect on the way people live through a consideration of function, aesthetics, economics and sustainability. City, University of London is committed to ensuring that its civil engineering graduates lead the way in technical expertise, strategic thinking, innovation and communication. Our approach is to encourage critical thinking and foster creativity through both teamwork and independant study. Students have access to world leading test facilities to undertake research projects and laboratory tests that support their learning.

All our engineering degrees are accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (which includes the Institution of Civil Engineers and Institution of Structural Engineers) as satisfying the educational base for providing a path for a Chartered Engineer (CEng).

City is ideally situated for civil and structural engineering, surrounded by a host of design and architecture practices in Clerkenwell Design Quarter. Recent graduates have worked on the Crosssrail project, the HS2 rail project and landmark buildings in the City of London. They have joined employers such as AECOM, Atkins, Balfour Beatty Engineering, Building Design Consultants, Jacobs Engineering, London Bridge Associates, Mott MacDonald, Arup, Ramboll and Skanska.

Modules

Year one is common to all of the engineering courses. You will study the science (largely physics) and mathematics that underpin engineering principles. Group exercises provide you with the opportunities to undertake preliminary engineering designs.

You will begin to specialise in year two, through the study of geology and soil mechanics plus measurement and data analysis, in addition to tackling more advanced solid and fluid mechanics topics. If you are registered on the BEng degree, and average at least 60 per cent at the end of year two, you will be encouraged to transfer to the MEng degree.

The course becomes more applied in the third year with the analysis and design of typical geotechnical, hydraulic and structural forms including the use of computational analysis techniques and coverage of construction management. You will undertake an individual project and address the challenges of providing sustainable and ethical designs that are safe to construct.

The balance of assessment by examination, practical examination and assessment by coursework will to some extent depend on the optional modules you choose.
