This course is ideal if you are interested in teaching Biology but are looking for a particular focus on the human body. This course provides a broad understanding of issues surrounding education, as well as the physiology of the body’s major systems, human health and disease. If you choose this combination, you will develop an understanding of issues affecting contemporary education in Britain and elsewhere in the world. You will analyse the significance of historical, social, political and economic contexts for education policy and learners from all parts of the world.
A number of modules in Human Biology address issues that relate to our ever-changing lifestyles, have a global perspective and have improved our understanding of health and disease. Human Biology has a multidisciplinary approach supported by input from research and clinical staff and conservation biologists. In your final year, you can choose to do a dissertation in Education or you will carry out a research project under the guidance of an expert in Human Biology. You will benefit from a supportive environment as well as fantastic laboratory facilities and equipment.
When you graduate, you might choose to do a PGCE to become a teacher. This combined course provides a superb grounding in preparing you for a career as a teacher. You will possess highly developed subject-specific and critical thinking skills that are prized for careers in schools.
Human Biology graduates combining with Education have also pursued careers in scientific writing, industry, genetics research, medical statistics, management, sales and the civil service. Several graduates have gone into Medicine. This combination also provides excellent preparation for postgraduate study.
Students who specialise in Human Biology will be awarded a degree accredited by the Royal Society of Biology.
