Are you fascinated by the power of language? If you've enjoyed studying language before, English Language and Linguistics is your opportunity to expand your knowledge and delve deeper into the fascinating world of language and linguistics.

You'll gain the confidence and skills to analyse the way language is used in society, looking at social interaction, digital media, political and commercial discourses, literature and the creative arts.

You'll explore the history of the English language and how language varies in today's society, as well as covering practical topics such as how children acquire language and methods for teaching English to speakers of other languages.

We'll give you an insight into more specialised areas of linguistic expertise, teaching you how to apply a range of research and analytical methods to language use.

You'll have the chance to broaden your perspective on language with optional modules in Spanish: Language and Culture, Shakespearean Drama or Constructions of Gender. We'll also give you the chance to take part in creative writing workshops, in which you'll produce your own creative writing and learn how to give and receive criticism.

Professional experience is crucial, so you'll complete two professional work placements during your degree. We'll also encourage you to think about how you can use your skills, knowledge and interests in English language and linguistics in your future career.

**Placement opportunities**
?We are one of only a few UK universities to build professional work placements into every degree. You'll complete two professional work placements, which will give you the chance to graduate with up to three months' professional work experience without having to take a sandwich year out.

You could complete your placements in primary schools, secondary schools, film production companies, recording studios or libraries. Recent students have worked on a wide range of projects during their placements, from writing copy for social media campaigns, to language teaching and organising fundraising events.

**Graduate opportunities**
You'll be qualified for a wide range of careers where knowledge about language, and alertness to language use, will be an asset. Our graduates work in teaching and education, media, the public sector, journalism, marketing, PR and communications. You'll also be well-prepared for the postgraduate study you'll need to complete if you want to become an English teacher.
