Design

The BA (Hons) Prosthetics, Modelmaking and Digital Design is a one-year programme providing a route to an honours degree for students that have completed a Foundation Degree in Prosthetics, Modelmaking and Digital Design, or an equivalent Level 5 qualification in a relevant specialist make-up or prosthetics design subject.
This course will develop technical practical skills, with a focus on the workshop roles of the prosthetics and related modelmaking industries. You will be able to explore and negotiate your own themes and outcomes, while meeting industry standards and expectations. You will develop the advanced skills required to work as a technician within the field of prosthetics, for workshop-based roles and prosthetic designer roles skilled in a range of techniques across crafts and digital methods, primarily within the TV, Film and Media industries. Wider fields of employment could be gained through transferrable skills developed from the course, such as prop, puppet and modelmaking, character and production design. The focus of this programme is on both traditional and digital visual skills used as blended effects, working within the contemporary prosthetics, modelmaking and VFX industries. You will also develop the academic and research skills to enable you to keep abreast of new developments or to transfer the application of these to alternative contexts and employment opportunities.
You will have access to fully equipped workshop spaces and make-up studios at WISE, alongside the Specialist Make-up Design students. This area is specifically for degree students and provides professional facilities to work on projects. You may also access other facilities such as digital design studios. SGS College will provide essential materials and tools for all modules. You will be required to purchase a kit of personal tools and equipment to support your studies (costs and specifications will be shared with students before enrolment).
You will have the ability to work competently within workshop environments to enhance your practical skills and develop further experience of current and emergent technologies within module projects; through tutor-guided development, individual and collaborative work. In addition, there will be opportunities for you to engage with industry through work experience, guest speakers, and attendance at industry events. You will develop a professional portfolio and have the opportunity to display your final project development work, developing business plans and final work in a showcase/exhibition.
You will write a dissertation, developing your critical thinking through researching your own (negotiated) study.

You will be required to buy or top up your existing kit for this course.

There may be an allocated visit as part of your study funded via your paid course fees– the course tutor will advise you of this trip and dates. Additional trips and visits to enrich your course will be at additional cost (not included in any college fees).

This information is from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), for undergraduate students only.

You can use this to get an idea of who you might share a lecture with and how they progressed in this subject, here. It's also worth comparing typical A-level subjects and grades students achieved with the current course entry requirements; similarities or differences here could indicate how flexible (or not) a university might be.

Post-six month graduation stats:

This is from the Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education Survey, based on responses from graduates who studied the same subject area here.

It offers a snapshot of what grads went on to do six months later, what they were earning on average, and whether they felt their degree helped them obtain a 'graduate role'. We calculate a mean rating to indicate if this is high, medium or low compared to other universities.

The Longitudinal Educational Outcomes dataset combines HRMC earnings data with student records from the Higher Education Statistics Agency.

While there are lots of factors at play when it comes to your future earnings, use this as a rough timeline of what graduates in this subject area were earning on average one, three and five years later. Can you see a steady increase in salary, or did grads need some experience under their belt before seeing a nice bump up in their pay packet?
