This course is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology. Digital telecommunications have transformed everyday life. People can talk, text, video and exchange data with each other at any time from just about anywhere on the planet, and all through one device. This course reflects the demands of an industry that is looking for specialists with an advanced understanding of the new technologies, and who are able to analyse, design and manage complex telecommunication systems. You will study a range of technical subjects, and learn project management skills and how to solve real-world problems.

Modules

This course will provide students with knowledge and skills in the areas of telecommunication systems, signal processing, mathematics, and programming, which should prepare graduates for employment in the telecommunication and networking industries and for pursuing a more advanced research degree. The distinctive features of the course are: Teaching and learning activities underpinned by leading research and scholarly activities. An opportunity to interact with research groups in the department and get involved in research projects. Industry links with local and regional partners, which provide students with professional opportunities. An opportunity to practice engineering skills in modern engineering and network labs. Provision of fundamental theoretical knowledge of telecommunications and computer science with an emphasis on emerging technologies. Opportunity to practice professional and project management skills.

This course has the option to be taken over four years which includes a year placement in industry. Undertaking a year in industry has many benefits. You gain practical experience and build your CV, as well as being a great opportunity to sample a profession and network with potential future employers.
There is no tuition fee for the placement year enabling you to gain an extra year of experience for free.

Assessment methods

The assessments will identify your skills, abilities, academic/occupational background and level to give you an early indication of what specific learning practices may help you specific areas of study.

This begins at your student induction period in conjunction with the ‘Fundamentals of Computing’ unit and continues throughout your in-course period of study.

You will have frequent opportunities to get feedback from tutors and peers and via self-assessment. Some assessments will allow for draft submissions to be considered to identify aspects in need of development before final submission.

Year 1 - 28% of assessment is by exam, 49% by coursework and 23% practical exam.
Year 2 - 43% of assessment is by exam, 29% by coursework and 28% by practical exam.
Year 3 - 15% of assessment is by exam, 85% by coursework.

Top job areas of graduates

This is one of the more popular areas to study engineering and there is not quite such a serious shortage of electrical engineers as there is of other engineering subjects - but there's still plenty of demand. The most common jobs are in telecommunications, electrical and electronic engineering, but there is some crossover with the computing industry, so many graduates start work in IT and computing jobs. At the moment, there's a particular demand for electrical engineers in the electronics, and the car and aerospace industries, and also in defence, and salaries can vary across the country depending on the industry you start in. Bear in mind that a lot of courses are four years long, and lead to an MEng qualification — this is necessary if you want to become a Chartered Engineer.
