Teaching takes place at the Kingsway Buildings.

The course challenge perceptions of Fine Art practice placing you firmly in a contemporary, interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary studio context. There is an emphasis on the relationship between theory and practice with a view that you will become informed practitioners fully in charge of the trajectory of your practice, research and thinking.

We support design through research, taking into consideration the needs of client and audience. Acquiring knowledge of the cultural, social and ethical concerns of design, and developing an understanding of your position on these issues, will give you the confidence to push the boundaries of design, exploring its social, commercial and entrepreneurial possibilities.

Assessment methods

For Fine Art, assessment of coursework will be both formative and summative. Assessed work includes exhibited studio work and related supporting work, for example, notebooks, sketchbooks, reflective journals, visual and material experiments etc. Theoretical work will be assessed through written essays, extended essays and a dissertation and may include assessment of oral presentations.

For Graphic Design, there are no exams. The majority of assessment is project-based comprising two elements: a body of research, idea generation and design development plus finished graphic artefacts. A small amount of assessment is through presentations or pitches and there will be some written work to be completed at each level.

Quite a few students of fine art have already retired and are taking the degree for the excellent reason that they love art, and they're willing to pay to study it. You should bear this in mind if the stats you see feature particularly low employment rates. If you need to earn a living once you've finished your fine art degree, be aware that freelancing and self-employment is common - about one in six fine arts graduates were working for themselves. Also common are what is termed 'portfolio careers' — having several part-time jobs or commissions at once - and many courses actually help you prepare for freelancing. One in ten of last year’s fine arts graduates had more than one job six months after graduation — over twice the average for graduates from 2015. Graduates from these subjects are often found in arts jobs, as artists, designers, photographers and similar jobs, or as arts and entertainment officers or teachers — although it's perfectly possible to get jobs outside the arts if you wish, with jobs in events management, marketing and community work amongst the most popular options.
