A level

A,B,B

ABB with A-level in the target Modern European Language (French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian). Typical Contextual Offer: BBB including one of the languages to be studied.

AS level results are not considered as part of the standard admissions process at The University of Manchester.

Access to HE Diploma

D:30,M:15

We require a QAA-recognised Access to HE Diploma (a minimum of 60 credits overall with at least 45 at Level 3), with merit or distinction in the target Modern European Language (French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian). You should have a minimum of 30 credits with a Distinction grade, plus 15 credits with a Merit grade, all in a Humanities-related subject. 15 of the Distinction credits should be in the target Modern European Language (French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian). Please note that applicants cannot begin both languages at beginners' level; they must already have an A-level or equivalent in one of the two Languages to be studied, as well as the Access qualification. Applicants must also either have GCSEs in both English and Mathematics (at Grade B/6 or higher), or be able to demonstrate achievement at Level 2 (GCSE-equivalent) by, for example, having 6 credits each in English and Maths. We also consider other factors such as additional educational achievements, life experience and skills on an individual basis.

Cambridge International Pre-U Certificate - Principal

D3,M2,M2

We consider applicants offering Pre-U Principal Subjects, or a mix of Pre-U and A Level subjects, provided a minimum of three distinct subjects overall is taken. Candidates taking Pre-U principal subjects in conjunction with A levels are expected to achieve a combination of D3,M2,M2 in the Pre-U and ABB at A level in three distinct subjects. If you require further clarification about the acceptability of this qualification please contact the Academic School(s) you plan to apply to.

The University recognises the benefit of the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and the opportunities it provides for applicants to develop independent study and research skills. We strongly encourage you to provide information about the EPQ in your personal statement and at interview. For this programme, as well as the regular conditions of offer, we may make students who are currently taking or completed the EPQ an alternative offer.

GCSE/National 4/National 5

Applicants must demonstrate a broad general education including acceptable levels of Literacy and Numeracy, equivalent to at least Grade C/4 in GCSE/iGCSE English Language and Mathematics. GCSE/iGCSE English Literature will not be accepted in lieu of GCSE/iGCSE English Language. Please note that if you hold English as a second language iGCSE qualification, we may also require you to offer one of our acceptable equivalent English Language qualifications or achieve a higher grade in your iGCSE than the one stated above. Entry requirements are based on achievement of the full Technical Diploma with Grades DM plus an A Level at Grade B in the target Modern European Language (French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese or Russian).

Entry requirements are based on achievement of the full Technical Extended Certificate with Grade D plus two A Levels at Grades BB; one of these A-levels should be in the target Modern European Language (French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese or Russian).

DD

Entry requirements are based on achievement of the full Technical Foundation Diploma with Grades DD PLUS an A-level at min. Grade B in in the target Modern European Language (French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese or Russian). PLUS an EPQ or AS at Grade B.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma (first teaching from September 2016)

DD

We require DD, plus one A-level at Grade B in the target Modern European Language (French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian).

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate (first teaching from September 2016)

D

We require a D, plus two A-levels at Grades BB - one of these A-levels must be in the target Modern European Language (French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian).

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016)

DDM

We require DDM. We also require an A-level minimum Grade B in the target Modern European Language (French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian).

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Foundation Diploma (first teaching from September 2016)

Modern middle eastern studies

This is a four-year degree with a year of Study Abroad divided between a Middle Eastern country and a European one in which your chosen languages are spoken. It combines the compulsory language element with options in culture, politics, history, literature, linguistics and religious studies for two countries.

Language course units progress from absolute beginner to advanced level in Arabic. There is a wide and constantly developing choice of optional course units; students receive advice from personal tutors when selecting these (between one and three each year).

In the first year, the balance between the two languages/cultures is equal; thereafter, the balance can be changed to one-third/two-thirds in favour of one of them.

**Special Features**

- Native speakers will be involved in your language teaching at all levels and an understanding of cultures forms an inherent part of the learning of the languages. Your study is supported by the multi-media facilities of the Language Centre. Staff there can also put you in touch with students who are native speakers of your chosen languages.

- Multi-cultural Manchester provides excellent general opportunities for contact with speakers of other languages and the pursuit of European and Arabic cultural interests outside the University of Manchester (e.g. public lectures, societies, cultural events etc.).

- For some European languages, we offer a unique independent language-learning course. This carefully structured course supports your learning during the first two years and is monitored by personal tutors. You are helped in focussing on areas you find difficult and receive constructive individual feedback.

- The year of Study Abroad offers you the opportunity to gain first-hand experience of fascinating countries in the Middle East and in Europe. You will have the chance to gain skills in the colloquial language, to experience the modern way of life there and to further your personal development. Students are eligible for financial support from the University of Manchester towards the cost of tuition fees at Middle Eastern institutions.

This is a broad subject for a variety of European languages. No matter which you take, the general theme is that some graduates go to that country to work, often as English language teachers, some go into further study, often to train as teachers or translators, but most get jobs in the UK in education - most often as language tutors, unsurprisingly, or translators. Modern language grads can also be in demand in business roles where communication and language skills are particularly useful, such as marketing and PR, and in finance or law. But remember — whilst employers say they rate graduates who have graduates who have more than one language, you need to have them as part of a whole package of good skills.
