BTEC Higher Nationals are designed to provide an engaging specialist vocational programme with a strong work-related emphasis, linked to the requirements of the professional bodies and National Occupational standards. The HNC comprises eight units and the HND sixteen units. You may study on a full or part-time basis. We also offer a top up from HNC to HND. Upon successful completion of the course you will be in a position to progress towards an undergraduate degree or further professional qualification in Electrical and Electronic Engineering or a related area. You will have developed a range of professional and work-related attributes, enabling you progress to employment.

Modules

In November 2016, Pearson, the awarding body for the College’s BTEC HNC/Ds, circulated detailed specifications for updated qualifications that will be part of the UK Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) and will provide essential subject knowledge that students need to progress successfully into further study or the world of work. The BTEC Higher Nationals in Engineering (Electrical and Electronic Engineering) on the RQF provide an engaging specialist vocational programme with a strong work-related emphasis, linked to the requirements of the professional bodies and National Occupational standards. Stage One units: Engineering Design; Engineering Mathematics; Engineering Science; Managing a Professional Engineering Project; Electrical and Electronic Principles; Digital Principles; Electronic Circuits and Devices; Electrical Systems and Fault Finding. Stage Two units: Research Project; Professional Engineering Management; Further Mathematics; Further Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs); Industrial Power, Electronics and Storage; Industrial Systems; Further Electrical, Electronic and Digital Principles.

Assessment methods

Learning methods include: lectures; group discussions; practical sessions; one-to-one tutor-student reviews. Through lectures, you will be encouraged to develop skills in listening and selective note taking, and to appreciate how information is structured and presented. The traditional form of delivery is enhanced through the use of computer-based or other audio visual aids and supported by VLE-based provision of lecture notes and discussion groups. Assessments may include elements of: practical assessments; portfolios of evidence; data analysis; case studies; oral and written reports; presentations; assignments.
