Entry requirements
112 new UCAS tariff points from an accredited Access to Higher Education Diploma in appropriate subject
GCSE/National 4/National 5
Minimum 4 GCSE's, grade 4/C or above, including English Language
International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme
27-30 total points in the International Baccalaureate Diploma with at least 15 IB points at Higher level
Pearson BTEC Extended Diploma (QCF)

UCAS Tariff
We consider the strength of our applicants’ portfolios as well as their grades and we therefore may make offers which are lower than our standard entry criteria of 112 tariff points. This may be to students who have faced difficulties that have affected their performance and who were expected to achieve higher results - in these cases, a strong portfolio is especially important. We regularly admit students with a tariff much higher than our standard 112 requirement, and applicants who show potential but aren’t quite at the stage to be able to succeed on the course are offered a 4 year degree with an integrated foundation year which has a standard entry requirement of 32 tariff points.

About this course
Are you passionate about building on your creative passions, gaining new skills, and fine-tuning your work, interests and thinking? Then our BA (Hons) Fine Art degree course at UCA Canterbury could be for you.
We want you to work with curiosity, develop ideas and themes, and consolidate your practice. With the support of our staff, you’ll experiment with a range of traditional and contemporary media, including painting, sculpture, installation, photography, film, sound, performance, animation, and printmaking.
You’ll also develop a deep theoretical and critical understanding of Fine Art and learn business and self-promotion skills as you build a professional network that will give you a strong foundation on which to build your career.
With full access to our large purpose-built studios and workshops, you’ll have the opportunity to experiment working in wood, metals, plastics and ceramics, as well as plaster and rubber casting, glass casting, and many more materials.
You’ll graduate with a wealth of transferable skills, distinguished by your creativity, ability to cope with change, and hardworking, flexible attitude to work.

Modules
In Year 1 you'll be introduced to approaches to making art and contemporary art making. You'll examine approaches in contemporary art practice and develop an independent research practice through workshops, peer critiques, group discussions, talks and lectures. In Year 2 you'll create a body of work to exhibit and will focus on areas of enquiry informed by staff research interests. You'll refine your studio work and develop your individual practice within the context of contemporary art, exploring artwork in wider terms by engaging with contemporary cultural and political issues. In Year 3 you'll create a body of work that will stand as a position statement on your practice and your expected approach towards the Degree Show Exhibition. You'll undertake a dissertation or research project on a subject related to the historical, theoretical or critical concerns of your discipline. You'll present a body of self-initiated work informed by current issues in contemporary art.

Top job areas of graduates
Quite a few students of fine art have already retired and are taking the degree for the excellent reason that they love art, and they're willing to pay to study it. You should bear this in mind if the stats you see feature particularly low employment rates. If you need to earn a living once you've finished your fine art degree, be aware that freelancing and self-employment is common - about one in six fine arts graduates were working for themselves. Also common are what is termed 'portfolio careers' — having several part-time jobs or commissions at once - and many courses actually help you prepare for freelancing. One in ten of last year’s fine arts graduates had more than one job six months after graduation — over twice the average for graduates from 2015. Graduates from these subjects are often found in arts jobs, as artists, designers, photographers and similar jobs, or as arts and entertainment officers or teachers — although it's perfectly possible to get jobs outside the arts if you wish, with jobs in events management, marketing and community work amongst the most popular options.
