**By combining studio practice with contemporary cultural theory and the history of modern art, you gain a strong academic grounding and a rich source of ideas for your own artwork.**

This course enables you to think and talk about art more confidently, while developing powers of visual analysis and a broad range of skills in art production, writing and curation. We address art history and making from a contemporary perspective, asking what art means to us now in relation to our own individual identities, experiences and bodies, as well as from broader cultural and historical positions.

Through the lectures, seminars and studio teaching – as well as weekly visiting artist talks – you will be exposed to the language, vocabulary and debates that have emerged historically and evolved to forge contemporary art.

The first year of your degree functions like a foundation year, giving you a structured transition between A-level or sixth form studies and the greater freedoms of guided independent learning during your degree.

**Develop as an artist**

By joining the lively community at Reading School of Art, you can explore a vast range of media, experiment with emerging art forms and develop as an artist. The studios are busy places with events, workshops, performances and exhibitions regularly taking place. There is dedicated space accessible 24 hours a day and seven days a week, and daily access to studio tutors during the week to help develop your individual and professional practice.

Trips to museums and art galleries help prompt thoughts on how art is displayed and received and you can gain professional experience by taking part in your own exhibitions, public art commissions and events. Our teaching staff are all artists, curators and researchers of international standing.

**Your learning environment**

You will learn through a mixture of studio teaching, seminars, lectures, group workshops and critiques, technical and material sessions, exhibition making, one-to-one tutorials and field trips.

You will have access to our range of facilities, including workshops for construction, printing and casting, darkroom for photography, digital tools for film and video editing, imaging, sound and web building and a dedicated audio-visual room and sound-recording booth.

**Placements**

Your degree includes career management skills training and you will be encouraged to undertake academic and work placements during your studies. Previous art students have enjoyed art internships at Studio Voltaire, Frieze Art Fair, and Tate Exchange, performed at the ICA, London and participated in an international exhibition at the Seoul Institute of Arts in South Korea.

**Study Abroad**

In your third year, you can spend a term studying abroad at one of our partner institutions in the USA, Canada, Australia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, and Europe.
You can also participate in week-long international study trips as part of a module for which you gain credits.

**Careers**

Our students graduate with a range of transferable skills, such as creativity, teamwork, time management, problem-solving and strategic thinking. You will enter the job market with well-developed skills in oral and visual communication, research and writing, together with a high level of cultural literacy and critical sophistication.

A degree in Art and History of Art will prepare you either for further study or to enter professions across the flourishing cultural and creative industries. As well as becoming an artist, curator and art writer, you could choose to work in museums and galleries, education, publishing, digital and social media or advertising and public relations.

Recent employers include Tate, Whitechapel Gallery, Christies, Microsoft, the BBC, V&A Museum, Manolo Blahnik.

Overall, 93% of our art graduates are in work or further study within six months of graduating (Destination of Leavers from Higher Education survey, 2016/17).

Quite a few students of fine art have already retired and are taking the degree for the excellent reason that they love art, and they're willing to pay to study it. You should bear this in mind if the stats you see feature particularly low employment rates. If you need to earn a living once you've finished your fine art degree, be aware that freelancing and self-employment is common - about one in six fine arts graduates were working for themselves. Also common are what is termed 'portfolio careers' — having several part-time jobs or commissions at once - and many courses actually help you prepare for freelancing. One in ten of last year’s fine arts graduates had more than one job six months after graduation — over twice the average for graduates from 2015. Graduates from these subjects are often found in arts jobs, as artists, designers, photographers and similar jobs, or as arts and entertainment officers or teachers — although it's perfectly possible to get jobs outside the arts if you wish, with jobs in events management, marketing and community work amongst the most popular options.
