If you want to make a positive change to young people’s lives and society as a whole, then studying this course is your first step.

Education Studies with Psychology examines how childhood is understood and shaped by society and how educationalists and psychologists theorise personal, social, emotional and intellectual development.

You will have the opportunity to undertake a voluntary placement experience towards the end of your first year and continue to do so throughout your second During your dissertation module in your final year, you will be able to tailor your learning to your career interests. and third years, which can help to significantly bolster your employability.

Graduates from this programme have the required skills to pursue education-related roles as teachers across various age groups, youth workers and more within local authorities, academies, nurseries and prisons, as well as in arts, community and alternative education roles. Many of our recent graduates have gone on to pursue teaching training programmes or continued on to postgraduate study opportunities, including our Education Practice MA programme, which allows students to develop their career in the education sector, specifically in relation to teaching, leadership and educational management.

- You will study a range of topics including historical and contemporary issues in education, perspectives on education and the core areas of psychology.

- Learn about the connections between Psychology and Education with the flexibility to specialise in your areas of interest through option modules. Modules you can choose from include Social Psychology, Abnormal Psychology and Counselling Psychology.

- Successful completion of the course provides an ideal foundation to progress onto a PGCE qualification, enabling you to become a teacher in the UK.

- Engage with the local community and boost your CV through placements and volunteering opportunities at schools, art and learning centres or museums. This provides opportunities to apply your learning to real-life contexts to gain first-hand experience, helping you become a work-ready graduate.

- By joining the DMU Education Studies Students’ Society you can enrich your experience through stimulating debates and social events with other students.

- Gain international experience related to your studies through our DMU Global programme. Education Studies students previously have taught English to school children in Taiwan, considered inequality and segregation in New York, and supported refugees in Berlin.

Modules

FIRST YEAR: Historical and Contemporary Issues, Teaching and Learning in the Primary Sector, Children and Social Justice, Core Areas of Psychology.

SECOND YEAR: Researching Education; How People Learn; plus one or two modules from: Philosophy of Education; Global Comparative Education; Contemporary Cultural Perspectives; Technological Transformations in Learning; Computer Programming as a Tool for Learning; Music in the Life of the Primary School; Optional Module.

THIRD YEAR: Education Dissertation; plus select two modules from: Placement Project (strongly encouraged); Education and Equality: Class, Race and Ethnicity; Gender and Education; Radical Educations; Education and the Arts; Special Educational needs in Education; plus two modules from: Counselling; Psychology Well-Being and Positive Psychology; Psychology and Education .

Assessment methods

A variety of teaching methods are employed, including: lectures, seminars, workshops, placement supervision, independent research and self-directed study. Assessment tasks include: presentations, micro-teaching sessions, contributions to electronic discussion boards, creating wikis and lesson planning, in addition to written assignments. There is one examination in year two. These methods will allow you to develop transferable skills relevant to a career working with children, including critical and reflective thinking and communicating ideas to a group.

20 years ago, this was a specialist degree for would-be psychologists but now it is the model of a modern, flexible degree subject. One of the UK's fastest-growing subject at degree level, and the second most popular subject overall (it recently overtook business studies), one in 23 of all graduates last year had psychology degrees. As you'd expect with figures like that, jobs in psychology itself are incredibly competitive, so to stand a chance of securing one, you need to get a postgraduate qualification (probably a doctorate in most fields, especially clinical psychology) and some relevant work experience. But even though there are so many psychology graduates — far more than there are jobs in psychology, and over 13,800 in total last year — this degree has a lower unemployment rate than average because its grads are so flexible and well-regarded by business and other industries across the economy. Everywhere there are good jobs in the UK economy, you'll find psychology graduates - and it's hardly surprising as the course helps you gain a mix of good people skills and excellent number and data handling skills. A psychology degree ticks most employers' boxes — but we'd suggest you don't drop your maths modules.

This means they already have jobs when they start their course, and a lot of graduates continue to study, whilst working, when they complete their courses.
