This programme is based in the Department of Psychology and it draws on the well-established undergraduate programmes in Psychology and Marketing. The mandatory courses in the programme are taken from the core courses in both disciplines, ensuring that students will graduate with a deep understanding of the nature of Psychology and Marketing and of the many fruitful linkages between them. Students will take courses in all core areas of Psychology with an emphasis on Social and Cognitive Psychology, which will equip them with the tools necessary to understand the links between individual and social behaviour. They will also study foundational marketing courses in First and Second Years introducing them to the principles of the discipline. In Third and Fourth Year, students will take more specialised courses allowing them to explore areas of marketing in depth. Finally, they will undergo training in research methods and statistical analysis, culminating in a dissertation, which will run across both semesters of their final year.

At all stages of the programme, there will be opportunities to take optional courses, allowing students to tailor their studies to meet their own interests. The precise choice of courses at each stage will change over time, adapting to students’ interests and the research specialisms of academic staff.

20 years ago, this was a specialist degree for would-be psychologists but now it is the model of a modern, flexible degree subject. One of the UK's fastest-growing subject at degree level, and the second most popular subject overall (it recently overtook business studies), one in 23 of all graduates last year had psychology degrees. As you'd expect with figures like that, jobs in psychology itself are incredibly competitive, so to stand a chance of securing one, you need to get a postgraduate qualification (probably a doctorate in most fields, especially clinical psychology) and some relevant work experience. But even though there are so many psychology graduates — far more than there are jobs in psychology, and over 13,800 in total last year — this degree has a lower unemployment rate than average because its grads are so flexible and well-regarded by business and other industries across the economy. Everywhere there are good jobs in the UK economy, you'll find psychology graduates - and it's hardly surprising as the course helps you gain a mix of good people skills and excellent number and data handling skills. A psychology degree ticks most employers' boxes — but we'd suggest you don't drop your maths modules.

Want to join a fast-moving, diverse industry that's at the cutting edge of tech? Try marketing! A lot of the jobs are in London, but graduates don't just go to work in advertising agencies — all sorts of industries do their own marketing these days, and with the rise of digital and mobile technology, a lot of marketing is done in quite innovative ways using a wide range of methods. Common industries (apart from advertising and PR) include recruitment, online retail, higher education, banking and IT. A lot of jobs in this industry are handled through recruitment agencies, so if you get in touch with them early, that might give you a headstart for some of the jobs available.
