Validated by Kingston University, the Foundation Degree in Business is designed for part time study at College and is recognised as a full time programme as it also incorporates learning taking place at work. It corresponds with the first two years of an Honours degree with the opportunity to apply and progress onto a third year ‘top-up’ to complete a full Kingston University degree (offered at Kingston College). The Foundation Degree will develop your awareness and knowledge of business, both generally and with direct relevance to your own work context. You will build upon, enhance and add to your existing business skills and develop study skills that will enable you to study successfully at university level.

Modules

Students will study the following core Level 4 modules each worth 30 credits, resulting in 120 credit for Level 4 study:
•Professional Development: This module focuses on self-reflection, development and personal effectiveness from a career and character profile allowing the student to focus on how their performance is affected by their past and future experiences and learning. There are 2 coursework assessments.
•Business and Legal Environment: This module introduces the concept of the business environment within which individual business organisations operate and how it has an impact upon their aims and objectives, day to day operation, and their future strategy. The sources of law are explored the influence that the legal environment has on business in general, and in particular situations and settings. There are two written assessments, and one on line test.
•Marketing: This module aims to introduce students to the marketing concept and enable them to apply the theory to their workplaces. It challenges students to think about how customers’ needs can be met using the resources available. Critically, the marketing concept of value underpins all the tools and techniques covered in the module. There are 2 coursework assessments
•Leading and Managing an Organisation: This module is intended to answer three key questions for students – What is an organisation? What is Leadership and Management? What knowledge and skills do leaders and Managers need in order to be successful? Students will consider key aspects of organisational behaviour, apply these to their own organisations and be given opportunities to develop and reflect on their own skills. There is a group presentation with reflection and written coursework.

On successful completion of Level 4, students will progress to Level 5 to study the following core modules, each worth 30 credits giving the required 120 credits at Level 5:

•Financial Management: Students learn the importance of the management of finance and in particular the management of working capital and gearing and the associated financial reporting requirements and the implications for financial recording. The module equips students with management accounting techniques and skills for internal planning and decision-making. There are three assessments: an online multiple choice assessment, an open book, mid module exam and written coursework.
•Operations Management: This module studies a range of operations management strategy and operational management processes to ensure that customer needs are satisfied. It aims to identify mistakes that are made operationally and how they can be controlled effectively. There are 2 coursework assessments.
•Enterprise and Innovation: An introduction to issues in the external environment affecting the small business population, enterprise start up and development. Students gain awareness of specific management and development issues for small businesses and their significance to national economies. There are 2 pieces of coursework.
•Human Resources Management: The module introduces the role that HRM plays in the success of an organisation. Students carry out research into a specific HRM policy area within their own organisation (learning and development, pay and reward, performance management & HR strategy and planning) and consider the effects of this policy on other areas of the business and on business performance. There is an individual presentation, reflection and a classroom test.

Assessment methods

Assessments are a variety of coursework, practical presentations, and tests. Formative feedback is widely used to ensure the students are well prepared for their final assessment. Alongside the formal teaching, there are subject tutorials to give one to one feedback.
