Construction management

On this course, you will gain a thorough grounding in the construction environment, its processes and the nature of the industry. You will also gain knowledge of project planning, project finance, and the regulatory framework in contract law and health & safety. You will also get an understanding of the influence of sustainable design and the need for efficient delivery of a project in terms of time, cost, and quality. With a long history of teaching civil engineering and construction programmes, matching industry-based learning with academic excellence, UEL's Construction Management, BSc (Hons) gives you everything you will need to fast-track your career. Most graduates go on to technical and professional employment in the industry and we have excellent links to employers and construction projects. The course has a common core, which will provide you with a good grounding in a broad skill-based area of study; academic skills in the built environment, quantitative methods, management and organisation, and construction technology. In the second year, you will go on to develop technical skills in estimating, planning, cost control, building services, and site organisation. The third year opens up the professional avenues of strategic and ethical management, lean construction techniques and sustainable procurement and supply chain management. The final year also includes a major individual project dissertation and the 'Constructionarium' field trip.

Assessment methods

We’ll assess you with a mixture of coursework and exams. Coursework includes essays, research reports, group and seminar presentations and a final-year project. Most of the assessment in your first year is by coursework and we’ll give you as much feedback as possible so that you can develop and improve your written assessment submissions.

The balance of coursework and exams in year two will depend on your optional choices. In your third year, part of your assessment will be based on your final research project and the rest will be a mixture of coursework and exams.
