The BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science degree is designed to equip you with a fundamental understanding of the diagnosis and prevention of disease. The degree reflects both the theoretical knowledge and the applied clinical laboratory skills required to be a biomedical scientist. Topics you study include genetics, cancer, immunology, microbiology, clinical biochemistry, disease and haematology. Theory learnt in class and on-line is support by practical application in our laboratories and local hospitals.
Biomedical scientists are at the forefront of our modern healthcare system working in partnership with medical practitioners and health care professionals, such as doctors and nurses, to perform many different roles in NHS laboratories. As a biomedical scientist you will be involved in the diagnosis of disease, supporting the function of A&E, operating theatres, evaluating the effectiveness of treatment and research into the causes and cures of disease.

As a student you will have the option to complete a 120-hour work-based learning both the second and third year of study. In addition you can opt to undertake a paid placement year working in industry between your second and third years. Our work-based learning and placements are a great way of improving your employability upon graduation.

Studying Biomedical Sciences you will benefit from purpose built science laboratories at our new £330 million Waterside Campus which open in summer 2018. You will also benefit from the strong links we have with the regions hospitals and health care practitioners.
